So lautet das Buch von JOHN ESQUEMELIN (ca. 1645-1707), das er 1678 unter dem Pseudonym ALEXANDRE OLIVIER EXQUEMELIN veröffentlichte. Zunächst arbeitete EXQUEMELIN für die französische Westindien-Kompanie und ging nach Tortuga. Anscheinend war ihm dies zu langweilig, und so schloß er sich den "BUCANIERS" an. Als Arzt kurierte er unter verschiedenen Kaperkapitänen die Gebrechen kranker Piraten (nett von ihm!). Als er ins gesetztere Alter kam, schickte er sich selber in Rente und ging nach Holland. Dort schrieb er seine Erinnerungen nieder. EXQUEMELIN gilt als authentischer Zeuge, sein Buch ist die wichtigste Quelle über die Piraten der Karibik.
Der barocke Titel der Englischen Auflage (1684) lautet :
Bucaniers of America: Or, a true account of the remarkable assaults committed of late years upon the coasts of the West-Indies, by the bucaniers of Jamaica and Tortuga, both English and French. Wherein are contained more especially, the unparallel'd exploits of Sir Henry Morgan, one of the Bucaniers, who was present at those tragedies, and translated into Spanish by Alonso de Bonne-Maison, M D & C. The second edition, corrected, and inlarged with two additional relations vide (?) the one of Captain Cook, and the other of Captain Sharp. Now faithfully rendred (sic!) into English.
