DON MARSHALL'S ACCOUNT 11

It was rumoured that 2500 men were lost on the first day.-One battalion losing 19 officers; 23rd command post: wiped out.-Tanks and tractors bringing with them supply and enemy fire as well.-"blasting rain of terror"-"star shells lit up the beach, rocks and wreckage"-"At night, no one left his hole for any reason, to do so was to die."-Don in search of the command post of the 5th Amph Tracs.-Don coming across Glenn Pyle.-A sniper blasting Glenn's canteen from his hands, also slicing the handle off Don's GI spoon.-Don finding the command post after heading out.-Don reporting to lieutenant Reece and Malcolm.-Tractors suffering high attrition rate.-Only little were killed.-More drivers than tanks.-They supplemented "the ranks of the more forward unis".-They found three abandoned Japanese LSMs.-They put a machine gun on top of one, then moved in setting up "a small cooking area and laundry".-Four Japs infiltrating.-The sentry's machine gun jamming; one of the Japanese panicking, "detonated his satchel charge and blew all of them into oblivion."
